About the illustrator

Rikyu Watanabe,dean of aircraft illustrators, was born in 1927 in Osaka, Japan. In 1943 he volunteered for the Japanese Army Flight Cabet School. When the war ended in 1945 he was at an army airforce bace in China. Returning to Japan, he enrolled in the Bunka Gakuen College where he majored in painting and from which he graduated in 1950. Since then he has become one of the world's leading illustrators. Sine 1966 he has specialized in aircraft illustration, thus bringing his two careers - Army Air Force wireless operator and artist - together to produce some of the finest aircraft illustrations that have ever been made.
